A Different Kind of Care

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the word "bolingo" means love. It's a fitting name for what Global Orphan Foundation has built there — not an orphanage in the traditional sense, but a place to really live, rooted in the belief that every orphaned child deserves more than survival. They deserve a family, a home, and a future. Bolingo Village is that conviction made tangible, and the work happening inside its protective gates is quietly remarkable.

The DRC is one of the most complex humanitarian environments on earth. Poverty is deep, infrastructure is fragile, and for orphaned children, the odds are stacked high from the very beginning. Global Orphan Foundation walked into that reality years ago and decided to build something that would outlast the challenges — a faith-centered community where widowed women serve as licensed foster moms, raising children not as a job but as a calling. Each child comes to Bolingo carrying a story of loss. The goal, from day one, has been to make sure that story doesn't define what comes next.

Education as a Promise

In the DRC, education isn't a guarantee. Schools can turn children away due to capacity issues. Grade retention is often high. And for orphaned children, the cultural expectation of academic success is often the lowest of all. Global Orphan Foundation decided early on that Bolingo Village would push back against every one of those realities.

Children at Bolingo attend the local school, but the support they receive makes all the difference. Dedicated tutors work with each child based on their individual needs, communicating directly with teachers to identify where extra attention is needed. Younger children are prepared for school before they ever walk through the doors, building the foundational skills that set them up to succeed rather than struggle. When local school capacity issues have blocked children from enrollment, Bolingo stepped in to ensure their education continued without interruption. The commitment is simple and non-negotiable: every child, regardless of ability or background, is expected and helped to thrive.

A Village That Can Sustain Itself

What makes Bolingo Village stand apart is the intentionality behind every layer of it. A working farm produces peanuts, sweet potatoes, maize, cassava, vegetables, and fruit, along with goats and chickens — providing balanced nutrition while training children and community members in sustainable agriculture. A clinic offers consistent medical care, including monthly health exams, serving both the children of Bolingo and the surrounding community. A well that was built in 2016 continues to supply clean, safe water. A nutrition center, now fully funded thanks to donor support, is set to begin construction and will ensure that no child at Bolingo goes without a consistent, nourishing meal.

A pastoral team, a trauma counselor, weekly church services, and foster moms who love their children round out a model of care that tends to every dimension of a child's wellbeing — physical, educational, emotional, and spiritual. Bolingo Village was never designed to simply meet needs. It was designed to change the trajectory of a child's entire life.
